William Y. Churchill
The following in regard to the
death of a former old resident of
Morris was taken from the Oneida
Daily Dispatch of Thursday, Dec, 2d:
"William Young Churchill eighty-two
died at the home of his son, Dr. Byron
J. Churchill, last night, after a
long illness. Mr. Churchill was born
in Finmore, Oxfordshire, England,
March 11, 1844. When six months old
his parents sailed for this country on
July 18, 1844, with a party of friends
and neighbors. It took them six
weeks to cross the ocean, as they experienced
a heavy storm which drove
them in sight of the England shores
again after they had been three
weeks at sea. Arriving in this country,
they settled at Morris, Otsego
county, where Mr. Churchill spent
nearly all his life before coming to
this city, with the exception of one
year that he spent in the west about
1867. During most of his life he was
engaged in farming.
In 1868 he was married to Miss
Lydia Beers, who died Feb. 11, 1916,
when he came here to make his home
with his son. Mr. Churchill, was
christened in the Church of England
and regularly attended the Episcopal
church in this country.
He was a man well liked and gained
many friends in this city during
his residence here. He is survived by
one brother, Richard and his son,
Dr. Churchill.
The funeral services were held
from Dr. Churchill's residence, 508
Elizabeth street Friday afternoon at
two o'clock, Rev. Wm. F. Davidson
pastor of Oneida Baptist church officiating,
with burial in Hillington
cemetery, Morris.

as reported on page 9, "The Otsego Farmer,"
Cooperstown, NY, on December 17, 1926.
