He was born Oct. 4, 1921, in Peoria to Russell R. and Esther D. Hawley Shreffler. He married Bettie M. Matheny on May 30, 1942, in Peoria. She preceded him in death.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Robert L. Shreffler.
Russell worked as a health inspector for the Peoria County Health Department before retiring in 1984. He also co-owned The Peoria Tackle Box with his parents.
He was a sergeant in the Army during World War II, serving from September of 1942 until March of 1946.
He was a member of the Madison Avenue United Methodist Church, a member of the National Rifle Association, and a member of the Masonic Temple Lodge 46, AF and AM, in Peoria.
A memorial service will be on Monday, June 5, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria. Inurnment will be in Springdale Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
