Donald Lee Hansen, 68

Donald was born Dec. 15, 1936, in Fremont, Nebraska, to Hans K. and Hilda L. (Schwanke) Hansen.
He spent most of his childhood years in Fremont, living briefly in Blair, NE and in Kennard, NE.

In 1937, his mother married Sigurd B. Larsen, so until 1956, Donald listed his name as Donald Lee Larsen. Then he changed his name back to his birth name, which was Hansen.

On Feb. 7, 1958 Donald married Evelyn K. Axtell in Tekamah, Nebraska. They were blessed with five children.

He worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads, then entered military service in the United States Air Force, serving from September 1954 until November 1957. After leaving the service, he returned to the Department of Roads, retiring after 44 years. He continued working part time for the department, and also worked for Bill Rhea, hauling alfalfa during the summers.

He was a member of VFW Post No. 854, and American Legion Post No. 20, both of Fremont. He had been a member of the former Lodge No. 26 of the Danish Brotherhood of America.

Donald L. Hansen, 68, died Dec. 24, 2004, at his home in rural Fremont.

Left to honor his memory are his wife; son Jason E. (Amy) Hansen, Sr. of Fremont; four daughters: Debra (Jon) Tank of Fremont: Ora (Damon) Watts of Hooper, NE; Christina (Calvin) Villwok of Arlington, NE; Valerie (Kevin) Burris of Kennard, NE; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Martin Schwanke of Ames, NE; aunt and uncle, Jeanette and Joe Jind of Fremont; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and two brothers.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Fremont. Interment will be in Fremont’s Memorial Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to St. Timothy Lutheran Church and the Fremont Area Medical Center Hospice program.
