Willard Ahira, son of George Warren Calkins
and Mary Lucretia Morley, was born March 18,
1893, at Tillinghast, Chippewa County. At age six
he came with his family to the Potato Lake Com-
munity where his father had purchased land to
develop a farm. Here he attended the log school,
built to serve the settlers, and grew to manhood.
On April 20, 1920, Ira was married to Anna
Kramer at Chetek by Elder Leroy Colbert of the
Latter Day Saint Church.
Anna was born August 7, 1895, at Valentine,
Cherry County, Nebraska, to Gottfried and Anna
(Schwab) Kramer. Gottfried was born at Bern,
Switzerland, and the Schwab family were im-
migrants from Germany.
In the early 1900s the Kramer family settled in
the North Lima community, Big Bend Township.
Here the children attended North Lima School.
In 1906 Anna was christened in the Lutheran
Faith with Mr. and Mrs. Voigt as sponsors. She
later joined the Latter Day Saint Church at
Only one child was born to them, Willard Gott-
fried, February 11, 1921. He graduated from
Potato Lake elementary school and Weyerhaeuser
High School, 1938. He attended Rusk County
Normal one year, the Latter Day Saint College at
Lamoni, Iowa, and University of Wisconsin,
Madison. On January 10, 1944, Willard died sud-
denly after a brief illness.
