World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Lockerley, England, he served as a Driver in the 37th Battery, Royal Field Artillery, British Army. On August 26, 1914, in actions at Le Cateau, France, Driver Luke took part as a volunteer team to recapture two British guns under heavy German artillery and infantry fire. Although the enemy was within 100 yards Driver Luke with the help of an officer and another driver managed to get one gun away safely. For extreme gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on November 24, 1914. He later achieved the rank of Sergeant and served during World War II as a ground gunner with the Royal Air Force. He died at age 87 in Glasgow, Scotland. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
