John B. Haas was born September 17th, 1921 in Chicago to Carl and Bertha, and he was the second oldest of nine children. His education consisted of graduating from St. Symphorosa Catholic School, a minor seminary
for high school students at MaysLake in Teautopis, Illinois, and then major seminary in Cleveland, Ohio, and completed his studies for the priesthood at Effingham, Illinois. He was ordained as a Franciscan priest and given the name of John Bosco Haas. Fr. Haas then taught for many years in the Chicago Franciscan high schools, as well as in Ohio, Texas, and Nebraska.

In 1968, he took a leave of absence from his order, and came out to Washington state. He taught one year at Mansfield, WA, and then for twenty plus years in the Federal Way School District at Lakota Junior High and Decatur High School in the areas of English, Reading, and Latin. When he retired from schools with over 40 years of teaching, he returned as an active priest in the Archdiocese of Seattle, and assisted parishes in the south end, especially at St. Martin of Tours in Fife, and periodically at St. Philomenas in Des Moines. Father John had many hobbies, including owning his own sailboat for many years, two different motorcycles, was a wood carver, a painter, and a good pianist. His love of music was well known. He is survived by his brothers Ralph, (Mary Lou Hass), Twin Falls, ID, and Tommy in Grand Prairie, TX, and two sisters, Barbara Salsbrand, (Jack), in Barrington, Illinois, and Therese Hass in Chicago. He is predeceased by his parents, Carl and Bertha Hass, his brothers, Roger and Larry, and his sisters, MaryAnn and Carol.
