Phoebe E shalz, a former resident of Sandpoint and Cocolalla, died Jan. 19 in Spokane, Wash. She was 89. final disposition was by cremation, and interment was at the Fairmount Cemeteries on Wellesley Avenue in Spokane.
Mrs. Shalz was born April 27, 1891 in Michigan. She and her husband, Nicholas M Shalz, moved to Sandpoint in 1916 after reading about the town in a Humbird Lumber Co. brochure which proclaimed the area as a good place to settle.
The couple made their home on Cocolalla Lake from 1917 until 1943. The family farm at Westmond is now the location of the Cocolalla Corner Store and Cocolalla Post Office.
Her husband preceded her in death in December of 1963. She is survived by a son, Woodrow Shalz of Granite; and three daughters, Pearl Shaver of Tonasket, Wash., Mary Christensen of Spokane, and Florence Clark of Brookings, Ore. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, and 36 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
