For six seasons (1970 to 1973 and 1975 to 1976), he played at the guard, defensive end and center positions in the National Football League with the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Born John Henry Ward, he attended Will Rogers High School in Tulsa. He played collegiate football at Oklahoma State University and distinguished himself as an All-American on the gridiron as well as a member of their wrestling team. He was selected by Minnesota during the 1st-round of the 1970 NFL Draft and appeared in 78 regular season games, as he contributed to two Vikings' squads that reached the Super Bowl (VIII in 1974 and IX in 1975). Following his football career, Ward became involved with a cattle ranch and served in local politics. He is a member of the Oklahoma State University Athletics Hall of Fame. (bio by: C.S.)
