Son of one of Portland's earliest settlers, Joshua Moody was born in Newcastle NH in 1697. He was educated at Harvard, but got into a bit of trouble there and was expelled for "crimes," the details of which are unknown. But after three months he was readmitted to the college and graduated in 1716. He came to Portland and became the first town clerk, then Justice of the Peace. He married Tabitha Cox and had 3 sons. He fell ill in the winter of 1748 and died in Portland. Tabitha remarried a Bayley and moved to Boston to live out her life. Unfortunately, Joshua's stone has not survived. However, this is the early section of Eastern Cemetery where other Moodys are buried and where Joshua likely was buried too.
