Fernando F. Velarde, 53, passed away due to cirrhosis of the liver at his home in his Calexico. While at University Hospital in San Diego, "Fernie" requested he be sent home for his final days.

He was born in El Centro December 22, 1953. Fernie graduated from Calexico High School in 1972 and joined the Army in 1973 stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Fernie enjoyed talking about his life to troubled youth and hoped sharing his life's experiences helped straighten theirs.

Visitation will be Friday, Friday September 14, 2007 at Hems Brothers Mortuary in Calexico from 6 to 9 p.m.

Services will be on Saturday, September 15 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Calexico.

Military services and burial will follow at Mtn View Cemetery.

Fernie was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Velarde 2004 and brother, Johnny Velarde in 1994.

He is survived by John Flores of Fresno, CA, Vincent Flores of Kelseyville, CA, William Flores of Moreno Valley, CA, Rosa Vasquez of Fresno, CA, Dora Martinez of Fresno, CA, Ernesto Velarde of Parker, AZ, and his favorite nephew, Bryan Fierro of Calexico.
