He played Major League baseball as a pitcher for fourteen seasons (1955 to 1957, 1960, 1963 to 1972) with the Washington Senators, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals, and Kansas City Royals. One of the first pitchers to throw in the "submarine side-arm" fashion, he led the National League in Saves twice (1965 and 1967) while with the Cubs. He ended his career with a total of 148 Saves.
