Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He attended the public schools of Boston, Massachusetts and matriculated at Harvard University where he graduated in 1860. Almost immediately he enlisted and was given a Captain's commission, then joined Company D of the 20th Massachusetts battalion of infantry. After only a few months he was transferred to the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry, where he principally served in South Carolina and Virginia. In 1863 he was advanced to Major and rose to second in command of the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry, and after the death of it's commanding officer in November of 1864 he was promoted to Colonel and took over command of the regiment. He served continuously through the four years of the war serving under Major General Philip Sheridan during the Shenandoah Valley and Appomattox campaigns and was present when General Robert E. Lee surrendered. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for gallant and meritorious service on May 20, 1865 at age twenty seven and mustered out of the service on June 20, 1865. After leaving the army he returned on a limited basis to the family business with the remainder of his time focused mostly on the life of a gentleman. (bio by: Saratoga)
