The youngest son of my little sister, Azzy touched so many people during his short life. He was a very sweet and special little boy who left us far too soon. He loved being pulled in his wagon, bubbles, coloring, Minnie Mouse, The Wonder Pets, and Jake and the Neverland Pirates.
In August 2011, Azzy was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma cancer. In January 2012, he was officially in remission, and in September 2012, we made plans to end treatment and bring him home because he had beaten it! In October 2012, the tumors returned, and his oncologist told us he had maybe 6 months left, though he was gone a short 4 weeks later.
He is fondly known in the world of childhood cancer as Azzy: Our Little Fighter. And that is exactly what he did, right up until the end.
I documented his story from diagnosis to his passing, and held his hand every step of the way. This little boy was an angel on earth, and nobody who knew him went away unchanged. He lit up an entire room with his smile, and we will never forget him.
Azzy leaves behind his mommy and daddy, two older brothers, four cousins (now five), three aunts, and four uncles. We miss him terribly, but know that he is finally without any pain as he runs alongside Jesus.
I wrote his obituary, which is below, and delivered his eulogy at his memorial service.
