| Birth: | Mar. 22, 1957 | | Death: | Apr. 10, 2004 | Singer, Songwriter. In the late 1970s he was hailed as a voice of Poland's Solidarity movement with such fiery protest songs as "Walls" and "Wolf Hunt", which criticized the communist regime and appealed to his people's sense of nationalism in fighting oppression. Faced with imprisonment after martial law was declared in Poland in 1981, Kaczmarski escaped to the west and worked as a broadcast journalist for Radio Free Europe. He returned to a hero's welcome in 1990, after the communist government had collapsed. He went on to tour and record several albums of his music, one of which, "Live" (2001), achieved Gold status. In 2003 Kaczmarski was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx, attributed to heavy smoking. When it was learned that he could not afford treatment, a nationwide fundraising campaign was organized on his behalf. He died at 47 in a Gdansk hospital. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
