Dorothy Ayers Mercer, 88, of Highland Farms Retirement Community in Black Mountain, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003.
Born in Bluefield, W.Va., and raised in Crewe and Roanoke, Va., she was one of the eight children of Mary Napier Ayers of Wayne County, W.Va., and Leonard Constantine Ayers of Henry County, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Lawrence Mercer, her daughter, Catherine and all of her brothers and sisters.
Dorothy enjoyed childhood visit to Wayne County, W.Va., with her mother, where she learned to swim in Twelve Pole Creek. She is a descendant of John Napier, inventor of logarithms and the decimal point. She instilled in her family the lessons of the Golden Rule, the folly of gossip, the value of a good fudge recipe and the joy of a good game of Solitaire. Her chicken and dumplings are legendary.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary Leonard White and husband, John F., of Black Mountain, Ann Logan and husband, Hal, of Denver, Colo., and Jenny Mercer and husband, Robert Sweetser, of Asheville, 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Highland Farms Retirement Community, 200 Tabernacle Road.
A memorial service will be held later in December.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
