Alfred was a great-grandson of Capt. Daniel Roe, an officer in the Revolutionary War. He was also a Civil War veteran, serving in Company A, 9th NY Heavy Artillery. He married Nora Metcalf on 22 Jun 1874 in Ashland. They had four children; two died young of diphtheria. Daughters Annabel and Harriett survived.


Alfred was the author of many books, including "Rose Neighborhood Sketches, Wayne County, New York", published privately by the author in Worcester, MA, in 1893. This book is a gold mine for any genealogist tracing their family history through Wayne County in the nineteenth century.

Seventy five miles west of Ashland, Laurenus Clark Seelye, 1837-1924, was the first president of Smith College in Northampton, Hampshire County, MA. Laurenus and Alfred S Roe's mother, Polly Catherine Seelye, 1827-1908, were sixth cousins.
