Samuel Wheaton went by John. His father, grandfather, great and great-great grandfathers were also named Samuel Wheaton. He was mistakenly referred to as S. John K. Wheaton in an obituary for his wife. Some family trees now erroneously refer to him as John K. Wheaton.

At age 25 John married Sarah House, age 18, on March 23, 1875, at a Presbyterian church at Corning, New York.

John cultivated grapes, fruit orchards and oat fields on his farm in the town of Springwater, NY, near the intersection of Strutt Street and Wheaton Hill Road. He later sold that farm and bought another near the intersection of Marvin Hill Road and Main Street in Springwater, New York.

"John Wheaton of Springwater died at his home on North Main street Sunday evening. He was born in Cohocton 81 years ago. He is survived by his wife; one son, George, of Springwater; three daughters, Mrs. George Fisher of Springwater, Mrs. Merle Wright of Dansville, and Carl Gross of Naples, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The funeral was held at the late home Thursday at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Lester Spencer of the Advent Christian church of this village officiating, with burial in Evergreen cemetery."
