Stephen Taylor -
There is a manuscript - "The Golden Chain; One American Family - Taylor" compiled by L. Jessie Bennett -
Vol. 1 - Page 201 - Stephen Taylor was born 1 July 1794 in Scipio,(now Venice), Cayuga, New York to Zeeb or Zebulon & Lydia Taylor. Stephen's parents were cousins.
Stephen Taylor married, at age 19 in about 1813, to sixteen year old, Sophronia Tifft. Stephen and Sophronia established a home in Batavia (became Elba in 1820) Genesee Co., N.Y. They had five children.
Stephen married Patty Barr about 1829 in Elba, New York. They had a son in 1830.
Stephen married Martha Turner before Dec. 1832 in Elba, New York. They sold land in Elba and Martha Turner is listed as his wife. They had two girls and two boys. Stephen Taylor was converted and baptized 1 Aug 1838. Stephen was active in learning the gospel and he attended meetings and several conference events held in his area over the next few years.
Stephen is recorded as being at the "The Log Tabernacle, in Pottawattamie Lands, Iowa, "at a Jubilee" or religious conference. Later as the large body of church members left Winter Quarters preparing for the westward trek to the Great Salt Lake Valley, Martha and Stephen are but one of many wagons assigned to Company One headed by President Brigham Young. The final stopping place for "Camp Israel" was Elkhorn, Nebraska on the Platte River. At least 500 men, women and children left this point from June to October 1848.
Martha had contracted a severe case of the measles that had swept through the camps at Winter Quarters. Stephen drove the wagon while Cyrenus rode along side the wagon. Fourteen year old Camilla tended her two little brothers and was helped by Lora Ann. Both fussed and tended their ailing mother.
Record shows, "Stephen Taylor in the Fifth Ten to enter the Utah Valley on 25 Nov 1849." Stephen went on a Exploring Party to the Southern part of what is now Utah to explore,in order to find suitable places to make settlements. Stephen was then 55 years old. This exploration trek accounts for his not being with the original party who settled in Manti, Sanpete, Utah in November 1849. When Stephen had completed his tour with the expedition he settled in the new settlement of Manti City. Here he is active in both church and civil activities. He is listed as a High Priest in the Manti records and is on the voting list of 7 Feb 1852.
Stephen Taylor's fourth marriage was to the widow Mary Jane (King) Marble, 15 Feb 1852 in Manti, Utah Territory. They were married by Isaac Morley. Stephen and Mary Jane Taylor established a home in the growing town of Manti. Stephen's family consisted of two young sons, Joseph Orson and Jared Alvin and one daughter,Lora Ann who was preparing for her coming up marriage in June to Neuman Brown.
The Missionary Records of the L.D.S. Church: (Missionary records, LDS Church, Journal History of Oct. 17, 1854 (G.S. Ser. No. 32516) Unpublished Ms., Historical Dept. Archives, Salt Lake City, Utah.) "#69, Stephen Taylor, Ap. SLC, Utah, Dep. SLC on 4 Sep 1854." "Oct. 17, 1854: A company of Missionaries, which left G.S.L. City on Sep 4, 1854, arrived on the banks of the Missouri River.
At 60 years old, Stephen Taylor accepted a mission call from the church and left for that mission from SLC on 4 Sep 1854 to go forth without purse or script to teach others the Gospel of Jesus Christ as revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith. On reaching the Missouri River the company broke up as the brethren had to travel in different directions.
In the genealogical book, "Desc. Of John Taylor of Windsor, Conn." By William Othniel Taylor states on pages 224 and 225, "In 1865 he (Stephen Taylor) came back to visit his old home and relations near Elba. While on Stephen Taylor return journey to Utah he was taken ill and died at Fort Laramie, Wyoming, on October 8, 1865." That has got to be a typo year. It must be 1855 that Stephen Taylor died instead.
