Henry Wade was born in the town of Farmersville, Feb. 1, 1836; his parents were Henry and Samantha Wade. He attended village school, and when sixteen years old went to Rushford Academy. He early showed a talent for music, and had violin instruction from a teacher in Chautauqua County. He became very proficient and was one of the leading violinists of Western New York, for several years touring this part of the country in "Wade's Band", of which he became leader. He finally gave up music, and engaged in lumbering, spending five years selling lumber along the Allegany and Ohio Rivers.

He closed out his lumber business and went to farming on what is yet known as the "Harry Wade Farm" on the Farmersville road two miles northeast of this village. While there the Civil War began and he was drafted in 1863. He hired a substitute, but when the call came six months later for "all able bodied men", he enlisted in Company D, 9th N. Y., Cavalry Dec. 20, 1863, and was detailed as hospital steward, to assist the surgeon in the care of the wounded, administering anaesthetics, etc. He participated in the battles of Winchester, Strasburg, Woodstock, Martinsburg and many minor engagements, and was wounded in the battle of Strasburg, Va. He was discharged March 31, 1865. His son, Milton H., was born while he was in active service.

After the war Mr. Wade resumed farming, and later sold the farm and came to Franklinville, where he formed a partnership with Urban Wilson and established a furniture and undertaking business. He afterward bought out his partner, and the firm became H. Wade & Son. He was engaged in the business nearly twenty years, and during that time conducted over a thousand funerals. Four years ago he retired from the business, which has since been conducted by his son.

Mr. Wade is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, which he has served as trustee; is a trustee of the Franklinville Cemetery Association, and Adjutant of Alanson Crosby Post, G. A. R.; he was actively interested in the promotion of Mount Prospect Cemetery. In 1858 he married Miss Helen Baker, and they are the last surviving couple in G. A. R. circles in this vicinity who were married before the war. They have two children now living, Milton H. Ware of this village, and Mrs. Edward Acree of Brooklyn.
