ROBERT PERRY OF LEES CREEK IS VICTIM
An 18-year-old Lees Creek youth died of injuries sustained in a car accident this morning, the second highway death in Clinton County within eight days.
The victim was Robert L. Perry of Cox Rd., Lees Creek, a Randall Co. employee.
State Patrol officers said the youth was driving along on SR3 and 6:30 A.M. 3.6 miles east of Wilmington.
He apparently fell asleep at the wheel. The car ran off the right side of the highway for 221 feet and slammed into a bridge abutment, turned over and landed on its top. The car's engine was driven back into the front seat by the impact, pinning the victim in for about 30 minutes. He was freed from the wreckage and taken by ambulance to Clinton Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead-on-arrival at 7:12 A.M.
Dr. Frank G. Plymire, Clinton County coroner, said death was due to a skull fracture. The victim also sustained fractures of both legs and numerous cuts and abrasions. The car was demolished.
Mr. Perry was the son of Mrs. Dorothy E. Mercer Perry who resides in Lees Creek and the late Lawrence Perry. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Jackie Vanzant of Kendalville, Indiana, Miss Sandy Perry of Dayton, Ohio and Susan at home.
He was a 1967 graduate of East Clinton High School and started work at Randall's last June 4 in the tubing processing division.
Mr. Perry was born in Greenfield, Ohio Oct. 21, 1949 and was a member of Lees Creek United Church of Christ.
