William volunteered for Civil War army service in the 107th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Aug. 10, 1862 as a corporal. Taken prisoner at Chancellorsville, Va, May 2, 1863, he was returned oct. 23, 1863. He was mustered out July 10, 1865.

William applied for an invalid army pension, June 30, 1866 which was issued as Certificate #157112. In the 1910 U.S. Census he is shown residing in Winters Creek, Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska, 70 years old, married once for 45 years with his own income. With him was his wife, Mary A., Gillett(sic), 71, married once for 45 years, 1/1 children, born in Ohio. They had one child, Ida, born 1866 in Ohio with the married name of Durnin. She lived with her parents with several of her children in Nebraska.

After William's death, Mary applied for a widow's pension based on his army service which was issued as Certificate #718647.
