Some transcripts of Vermont death records suggest Hotensia was 32 years old; her death announcement states she was 33 years old. Born 1874 t0 1795, depending on source.Place of birth from a suggestion; could not be confirmed.

Hortensia was the daughter of Frances Montresor Penniman, widow of Ethan Allen, and Jabez Penniman.

Hortensia married William Brayton on August 2, 1812. The couple lived in Swanton, Vermont, where William practiced law. They later spent a couple of years in St. Albans, before moving to Burlington in 1822 or 1823.

At the time of their death, Hortensia and William had 3 daughters living and attending school at the Boarding School of the Congregation Notre Dame in Montreal, Canada. Probate records indicate the girls were brought back to Vermont when William died, but there is no mention of their names.
