Jacob Terpstra is the first child, born in October 1887 in the northwestern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland in the farming village Hitzum (Friesian: Hitsum), named for his grandfather Jacob Wypkes Terpstra. On 31 March 1909 Jacob Terpstra (21 y) arrived alone on the SS Potsdam at New York, 22 March 1910 followed on the same ship by his parents Ynte (50 y) and Pietje (49), and by his siblings Hittje (11), Richtje (13), Tide (17), and Bote (19). Their last residence place was Exmorra in western Friesland.

On 21 November 1917 Jacob Terpstra, 30 years aged, married at Manhattan, Gallatin County, in the southwestern part of Montana to the eight year younger Effie Ungersma.

In October 1918 they farmed near Anceney, Gallatin County, about 10 miles southwest of Amsterdam-Churchill, when their first child, Ernest, was born. In the beginning of 1920 they live in Gallatin County too. In May 1923 they lived in the Dutch settlement Orange City, Sioux County, Iowa, when their son Bernard was born. In 1930 they live in the Dutch settlement Holland, Gallatin County, with their children Ernest (11 y), Teressa (9 y), Henry (8 y), Bernard (6 y), Jerard (4 y) and Jacob E (2 y). Theresa was born on 6 August 1920 at Lyon, Lyon County, Iowa, Henry on 22 January 1922 at Inwood, Lyon County, Iowa, and Bernard on 5 May 1923 at Orange City, Sioux County, Iowa. The other children, Ernest, Jerard and Jacob were born in Montana.

In 1940 farmer Jacob Terpstra (52 y) resided with his wife Effie (45 y) and their children Theresa (19 y), Henry (18 y), Bernard (16 y), Gerard (14 y) and Jacob (12 y) at a rented home at Holland (still), Hilly Side Road, Gallatin County. In 1935 they lived in the same house at Holland.
