Maria was the daughter of Giacomo Vitali and Agata Brunetti. She emigrated from Italy with her husband, children and their families, and arrived in New Orleans on Nov. 30, 1895 as a part of the first group of Italians to work at the Sunnyside Plantation/Settlement in Chicot County, Arkansas.

Circa 1911, she relocated to California with her son, Peter, his wife, and daughter.

She was cremated by East Lawn Memorial Park in Sacramento. Her ashes were kept by the family and it's unknown what became of them.

Maria's brother was Domenico Vitali.
