Funeral of PFC Penney Will Be Held Saturday
WALDEN - The body of Marvin R. Penney, first of Walden's war dead to be brought back from overseas, will arrive here Thursday. Funeral services will be held at two p.m. Saturday in the Walden Methodist Church. Penney, a private first class in an infantry unit, was killed in action October eighth, 1944, near Gertneter, Germany. He was born March ninth, 1924, in East Walden, a son of Decature and the late Addie Palen Penney. He had lived here all his life, attending Walden High School before entering service in 1943 at the age of eighteen. Private Penney received his basic training at Camp Wheeler, Ga., and was moved overseas in June, 1943. He participated in campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, France and Germany. The Purple Heart medal was awarded post-humously in December, 1944. Survivors include his father and seven brothers, Stanley, Gilbert, Decature, Jr., Robert, Kenneth, Dennis and David; and four sisters, Jeannette, Elaine, Ferne and Marion. The Rev. Edward C. Wahl will officiate at the funeral. Military honors at the funeral will be in charge of William Deakin Post, American Legion. Friends may call at the Millspaugh Funeral Home Friday afternoon and evening. Burial will be in Wallkill Valley Cemetery.
