The inscription of Joseph's [Motley] tombstone is indicative of how highly esteemed he had been. The inscription was copied and sent to me by one of his descendants:

"Few men have exemplified the characteristics of a good and useful citizen in higher degree than did Mr. Motley. Industrious, enterprising and frugal; he attended to his own concerns without intermeddling with the affairs of his neighbors. By the strict observance of this course he prospered beyond most of his neighbors and earned for himself the reputation of an honest man, a useful citizen and good neighbor."

By B. A. Davis [who] commented on the grave stone. saying "a nice marble slab about the size of a barn door and located near Danville, Va."
