|Birth: ||Dec. 27, 1943|
|Death: ||Mar. 25, 2006|
Norman "Bud" Sydney Olsen Jr., age 62, went to be with our heavenly father, surrounded by his family and friends on March 25, 2006. Our beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend, lost his battle with an aggressive cancer, and will be truly missed by all.
Bud was born in Eureka on December 27, 1943, and was a native of Eureka. He graduated from Eureka High in 1962 and then spent four years in the Navy. After returning from the Navy, he met the love of his life, JoAnne, and her son Trent. Bud fell in love with both of them and they were married in 1970. Bud and JoAnne added two more beloved children, Rebecca and Eric, to their family.
Through the years, Bud worked as a fireman for the Eureka Fire Department, a plantmanager and gas truck driver at Davenport Marine, and an airport service supervisor for the County of Humboldt. Bud continued to work at the airport until the illness prevented him from performing his duties.
Words cannot express how much he meant to his family and friends. Bud was the "Go To" guy for the people he loved. He was honest, hardworking, and always gave 110% in every aspect of his life. Bud's joys in life were his family, building and flying model airplanes, spending time at his summer cabin in Bridgeville, and RV trips. He especially looked forward to the annual family reunion at Wages Creek, with his cousin-in-law and best friend Jerry Shipley and his wife Maureen, where breakfast burritos and gin fizzes were a tradition.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, JoAnne; his children, Rebecca Olsen, Eric Olsen, and Trent Hauger and his wife Jackie; his mother, Barbara Olsen Gillenwater and stepfather, George Gillenwater; his sister, Norma Neville and her husband Harold; his grandchildren, Kailee Olsen, Caleb Groncki, and Corrinne Hauger; his sisters-in-Iaw, Judy VanZelf and Jeanette Watkins and her husband Gary; his brothers-in-law, Charles Anderson and Bob Anderson and his wife JoAnne; his aunts, Harriette (Rust) Farr and Alma Davis; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends whom he loved very much.
He was preceded in death by his father, Norman Sydney Olsen Sr.; his uncle, Mervyn Olsen; and his aunt, Ann Merriam.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Life Church, 2337 Kipling Drive, Eureka, on Saturday, April 1 at 11:00 a.m. A celebration of Bud's life will be held at the Humboldt Peace Officers Association Hall, 2351 Freshwater Road, Freshwater, from 1 to 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society Relay For Life Team # 174.
He Only Takes The Best God saw he was getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around him and whispered, "Come with me." With tear-filled eyes we watched him suffer and fade away. Although we loved him deeply, we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard-working hands put to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best. Author Unknown
