The son of Howard Edward Levan and Anna Laura "Annie" Owensby, "Joe" served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a seaman second class when he received his discharge from the service.
Joe married Donna J. Kreider on 02 Mar 1952 in Wood River, Madison County, Illinois. They were the parents of 5 children.
Joe worked as a salesman for 24 years at the Sears Roebuck store in Alton, Illinois. He retired in 1979.
He was a member of several civic and social organizations including the American Legion, the Wood River Moose Lodge and the Alton Sears Retiree Club. He was a member of the Wanda Cemetery Board and the First United Methodist Church in Wood River.
At the time of his death, Joe was 72 years, 1 month and 3 days old. He was survived by 3 sons and 3 daughters-in-law; 2 daughters and 1 son-in-law; 11 grandchildren; 1 brother, Ebert "Bud" Levan of Blytheville, Arkansas; and 2 sisters, Ruby Baker of East Prairie, Missouri, and Loretta Bond of Charleston, Missouri.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Donna; 1 granddaughter, Gabrielle Marie Levan (stillborn); 1 son-in-law, Dr. Charles Grayson; and 1 sister, Thelma Hobbs.
Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. 09 Apr 1997 at Marks Mortuary in Wood River, Illinois. Funeral services were conducted there at 10:30 a.m. the following morning. Joe was buried next to his wife, Donna, who passed away in 1994.
