Birth: Dec. 28, 1828
Death: Mar. 8, 1892

German-born and naturalized April 19, 1858, in 1860, he was living in Berwick Township, Adams County. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Adams County October 16, 1862, as a substitute for Joseph W. Hendrix, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 7 as a private with Co. H, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. He also enlisted in Harrisburg August 31, 1864, mustered there September 1 as a private with Co. D (and spent some time in Co. I), 205th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 2, 1865. Both Bates' History of Pennsylvania Volunteers and the company descriptive list spell his name "Rebbel."

He married Magaret Schwerber and fathered John A. (b. 03/01/78), Margaret (b. 11/25/80), Catherine A. (b. 02/07/82), Ann Susan (b. 03/31/86), and Mary (b. 01/01/90). The first three children were born in Germany, the second two in York or Adams County, Pennsylvania.

There is some evidence that he may have had a first wife named Mary Little.
