Heart Attack Causes Death of Prof. Smith

Beloit, Wisc. June 19.prof. Erastus g. Smith, resident of this city for 56 years and for 40 years a member of the Beloit college faculty, died this morning at Holyoke, Mass., According to word received here by relatives. He was 82 years old.

Prof. Smith had taken a leading part in community affairs in Beloit since he came here in 1881 to take the chair of chemistry and mineralogy at Beloit College. He retired from the college faculty in 1921. During his long residence here he had served four terms as mayor of the city and three terms as assemblyman from the Second District of Rock County.

On Friday Prof. Smith attended his sixtieth class reunion at Amherst College, Amherst, Mass he suffered a heart attack Friday afternoon which was not considered serious and motored on the Holyod where the second and fatal attack occurred Saturday. Accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. Albert Holmes, Evansville, Wisc. Prof Smith left Beloit June 7 for a tour of eastern cities before reaching Amherst.

For almost 50 years, Prof. Smith was associated with the Beloit Savings bank and was its president from 1914 through 1928. He was the bank's oldest trustee in point of service. He was dean of Beloit College in 1903-1904.

Erastus Gilbert Smith was born April 30, 1855, in South Hadley, Mass., son of Byron and Nancy Smith. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Amherst in 1877 and his Master of Arts degree in 1880. He was awarded the doctor of philosophy degree in 1883 by the University of Gottingen, Germany and in 1921 Beloit college conferred upon him an honorary degree of doctor of laws.

On Dec 26, 1883, he married to M. Elizabeth Mayher of Easthampton, Mass Mrs. Smith died at their home in Beloit on Dec 16, 1931. Prof. Smith was a member of all Beloit Masonic bodies and the Madison consistory, Delta Upsilon fraternity, Knights of Pythias lodge, and the Kiwanis club. He served on the state council of the Modern Woodmen of America, was a past president of the Beloit Historical society, and during the world was chairman of the Beloit Red Cross organization. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Beloit.

Prof, Smith was known as an authority in the fields of chemistry and had written several articles and books on chemistry and mineralogy. He was often called in as consultant by national manufacturing concerns.
