Birth: Jul. 26, 1892
Death: Nov. 13, 1942

World War II Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. Born in San Francisco, California, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1911. Served as a Rear Admiral, chief of staff Commander, South Pacific, during action against enemy Japanese forces off Savo Island. On the night of November 13, 1942, he led his forces against tremendous odds, in the naval Battle of Guadalcanal. With tactical skill he helped turn back a far stronger Japanese fleet and was killed in action on board his flag ship the U.S.S. San Francisco (CA-38).
