OBITUARY FOR HOWARD "HOWIE" EARL WILLIAMS

Howard "Howie" Williams, 77, Phoenix, Ariz., died Dec. 25, in his residence.

Mr. Williams worked at Caterpillar Tractor Company, Peoria, Ill., in parts management for 35 years before retiring in 1985.

He earned a Bachelor of Science from Purdue University in 1950.

He was a member of the 1952 Helsinki Olymppic gold medal basketball team. While playing basketball at Purdue, he earned MVP and All Big Ten titles. He played AAU basketball for the Caterpillar Diesels from 1950-53, earning Los Angeles Times AAU Basketball Player of the Year in 1952.

His memberships included P Men's Club; Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity; Helms, Indiana and Montgomery County basketball halls of fame; Greater Peoria (Ill.) and Illinois sports halls of fame; and Traffic Club of Indianapolis.

He was born to Earl and Nellie Williams. He married Rosemary Woody on Dec. 23, 1950 in Thorntown, Indiana. She survives.

Also surviving are daughters Carolyn Jean and Lee Ann Williams, both of Scottsdale, Ariz; brother Homer, New Ross; and sisters Helen (Bob) Williamson, Ladoga, Mary Walters, Crawfordsville, Aileen Young, Frankfort, and Doris (Jim) Dice, Monmouth, Ill.

A private memorial service is scheduled Jan. 15 in Messinger Mortuaries, Scottsdale, Ariz.
