John Elmer Doxon

John Elmer Doxon, 91, of Emporia, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at Newman Regional Health, Emporia, surrounded by his family.
John was born March 8, 1921 in Formoso, Kansas, the son of Charles Emery and Nettie Merle (Ellsworth) Doxon. John married Venda Leigh Hunter on September 2, 1942, at the home of the bride's aunt in Hutchinson, Kansas. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Jana Leigh Knudsen and husband Wayne of Emporia, and Jo Ellen Dambro and husband Indy of Emporia; daughter-in-law, Kristine Doxon Hampshire of Lee's Summit, Missouri; five grandchildren, John Doxon, Danielle Knudson, Katrina Doxon, Ryan Dambro, and Megan Dambro; three step-grandchildren, Kent Knudsen, Kris Eckhardt and Linda Knudsen; seven great-grandsons; and six step-great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Richard Doxon; two sisters; and three brothers.
During World War II, John served as a First Lieutenant in The Army Corps of Engineers, 44th Division, 63rd Battalion. He then taught math and science, and coached for nine years in Jewell, Kansas, and also at Shawnee Mission (North) High School in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. After teaching, he became an engineer for Western Electric. He retired from this career as a senior engineer for AT&T in 1984, in St. Louis, Missouri.
John had two degrees from the Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, and had attended Kansas University, and Purdue University. He was a 60 year Mason, a member of Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, Emporia, and Veterans of Foreign Wars post #7957. He was an avid golfer, loved to read, and enjoyed listening to all kinds of music.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the First Congregational Church in Emporia. Pastor Andrew McHenry, of the church, will be officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday, November 9, 2012 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia.
Interment will be in the Graceland Park Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska, at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, November 12, 2012. Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church, Paralyzed Veterans, or Emporia Friends of the Library, and sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
