Mildred Pearl Whitney, 93, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997 at Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller, S.D. She had been in poor health for some weeks before her death. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997 at Reck Funeral Home, Miller, with the Rev. David Shipman, Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial was in the G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller.
Mildred Pearl Whitney was born November 17, 1903 in Hand County, South Dakota, the daughter of Irving B. and Bertha J. (Heilman) Whitney. She made her home in Pleasant Valley Township until 1943 when she moved with her parents to Miller. She attended Wessington Springs College and graduated from General Beadle College of Madison. She taught school for 14 years and then took a position with the State Auditor's office in Pierre. She then resigned her position to care for her aged parents until they passed away. She worked in the Hand County
Auditor's office in Miller.
After retirement, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crafts and making quilts. Many of her quilts and crafts were given away to family and friends. She received many compliments and praise for beautiful penmanship during her lifetime. She was a member of the Nazarene Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Verna May Harrison; and one brother, Elmer E. Whitney.
Pallbearers were John B. Heilman III, Craig E.
Heilman, Douglas A. Heilman and Henry "Chip" Heilman.
