William Pleasant Daily was born in Cherokee, AL, originally located in Franklin county, but became Colbert county. It is believed that he moved from Alabama to Linker Mountain, AR around 1871; he was about 6 years old. His father, Ransom, homesteaded this farm following the Civil War. In Pope county, AR, William P. married Lillie Belle Talkington on December 10, 1885. He was twenty years old, and she was seventeen. They would have a large family of seven children.

In 1891, W. P. and Lillie bought 100 acres of land in Pope county, AR for $200. In November 1896, they bought 70 acres for $700. They farmed and also ran a grocery store with a Post Office in Terrell, AR. Around 1907-1908, they left Arkansas and moved to Abilene, TX, and then to Plainview, TX. It was in Plainview that they would build a hotel from lumber that was transported from Arkansas to Texas. This was believed to be named The Daily Hotel. At first, they lived in the hotel with six of their children. Then, they built a fourteen room house for their family. Soon the the children were grown and the house became too big for them. This hotel eventually burned. While here, W.P. and Lillie ran a grocery until the hotel was built. They operated a feed, coal and wagon yard, as well. They eventually sold this house and moved to a smaller one in Lockney, TX.

In 1911, W.P. moved to Floydada, TX where he built another hotel, a bigger hotel. It was called The Commercial Hotel. It opened in January 1913 with 21 guest rooms. This hotel catered mostly to traveling salesmen; W.P. transported his guests from the railroad station in a horse-drawn buggy. He allowed them to display their wares in the hotel lobby. This hotel is still standing and is operated by a family member. In 1964, it was renamed The Lamplighter Inn. It has become a state historical marker in Texas. (Sesquicentennial Historical Marker; Texas Sesquicentennial 1836-1986). It is said to have many old pictures on its walls. Some of the grandchildren worked and lived with their grandparents while this hotel was in operation.

William Pleasant died with a stroke on April 10, 1941. He suffered about 18 months with a paralytic condition that gradually grew worse and caused his death.
