Daughter of murder victim, Thomas Fletcher Richard, and Ruby Massengale Richard. Leota was very little when the KKK killed her father and friend, Filmore Watt Daniel on August 24, 1922 in Mer Rouge, Morehoues Parish, Louisiana. Ruby, Leota's mother, her sister, Vera, and her grandmother, Fletcher's mother, Mrs. Anna Garrison, fled the area because of threats from the KKK.

Mrs. Leota Denton, 88, of Noel, Missouri, departed this life on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at the Golden Living Center in Anderson, Missouri.

Leota was born on December 15, 1918, in Monroe, Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. Daughter of the late Fletcher and Ruby (Massingale) Richards. She came to McDonald County as a child. Early in life she married Boone Denton and to this union one daughter was born. She loved call Noel, Missouri her home. She was an avid bowler and took great pride in the way she cared for her home.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Boone Denton on June 24, 1993; a daughter, Leota Sands; and her sister, Vera Abney.

Funeral services for Leota Richards Denton are 10:00 am, Monday, October 29, 2007, in the Noel Chappel of the Ozark Funeral Home with Bro. Rob Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Noel Cemetery. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of the Ozark Funeral Home in Noel, Missouri.

The people of Morehouse Parish, Louisiana have never forgotten the murder of Leota's father and they have searched for years for his children. I hope the girls had happy lives given that they were tramatized at such an early age.
