James and Arletta Bare owned forty acres near Bellmont, Illinois. They started an apple and cherry tree orchard and a mill to produce cider and sauces. The local farmers brought their fruit to the mill to be processed into juices, butters, and sauces. At first, a horse did the grinding and squeezing by pulling the mill around in circles. This business provided a reasonable living for the Bare family. Progress at the mill continued. During year 1890 (approximately), to power the grinding process, the horse was replaced with a steam driven engine. Shortly after the turn of the century, Arletta died. Following her death, her husband, James, seemed to lose interest in the mill and closed the business. With the passage of the years, the fruit trees were removed to clear the fields for farming.
