| Birth: | 1911 | | Death: | Dec. 7, 2004 |  Country Musician. A native of Mount Pleasant, Texas, Scoggins was the lead singer of the band, 'The Cass County Boys.' The band became famous in the 1930s while performing on Dallas, Texas, radio stations, but gained later fame on Gene Autry's 1946 radio program 'Melody Ranch', and for there recording of the song, 'The Ballad of Jed Clampett', which was used as the theme song for the classic television series, "The Beverly Hillbillies" which ran from 1962 to 1971. Scoggins and his band also appeared n over 19 films including, "Sioux City Sue" (1946), "Twilight On The Rio Grande" (1947), "Riders Of The Whistling Pines" (1949), "Apache Country" (1952), and "On Top Of Old Smoky" (1953). In 1993 Scoggins who was retired from acting and singing, came out of retirement to sing the theme song once again, but this time for the film version of, "The Beverly Hillbillies", starring Jim Varney and Erika Eleniak. Scoggins passed away at the age of 93, in December 2004. (bio by: K)
