| Birth: | Feb. 12, 1828 | | Death: | Jan. 14, 1892 |  Civil War Confederate Major General. Born in North Carlolina, he graduated from West Point in 1850 and served as an officer in the 1st Dragoons on the Western Frontier. At the start of the Civil War, he resigned his commission and was appointed a Captian in the Confederate Cavarly in early 1861. Promoted Colonel of the 1st North Carolina Cavalry in October 1861, he fought in the Peninsula and was promoted Brigadier General in March, 1862. He led his North Carolina Brigade in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg and was promoted Major General in January, 1863. He commanded cavalry in actions through western Virginia, Tenenesse and was relieved of command in August 1864, due to illness. He ended the war serving on military courts at administrative posts before surrendering to Federal troops on May 2, 1865. After the war, he was express agent and City Marshal at Wilmington, North Carolina.
