Peter Wells of Rhode Island and his Descendants by Lorraine Tarket-Arruda, 2003, Pages 16 and 21: Charles Thompson Wells, mail carrier; born January 28, 1859 at Hopkinton, Rhode Island, a child of Denison Wells and Teresa Greene; married Sarah Imogene Hill, December 16, 1877 at Hopkinton, Rhode Island; four children: unnamed female; unnamed child; Joseph Dennison; Arthur Ray.

1880 US Census, Rhode Island, Washington County, Hopkinton, Town of Ashaway, NARA T9-1210, Page 323, ED 154: Charles Wells, age 21, farm laborer, born Rhode Island, parents born Rhode Island, enumerated with wife Immogene and his parents.

1887 Providence, Rhode Island, City/Business Directory, Page 738: Wells, Charles T., Express and Stage; Ashaway.

Charles Thompson Wells' wife Imogene, died in 1890. It appears, after her death, Charles placed the care of his two sons, Joseph and Arthur, in the hands of their grandparents, William and Lucy Hill, and in 1894 Charles "went west." William and Lucy Hill raised their two grandsons to adulthood, their father Charles apparently never returned to Rhode Island. In the 1930 census, Charles may appear in California's Santa Clara County Almshouse as a 73-year-old inmate.
