US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served Massachusetts' 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives (1975 to 1993). Early attended Holy Cross College and distinguished himself athletically as a member of their basketball squad which captured the 1954 NIT (National Invitation Tournament) Title, as he worked his way towards earning his Bachelor of Science degree. Following a two-year stint with the United States Navy, he moved onto teaching at the high school level. After becoming interested in politics, Early was elected to and served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1963 to 1974. During his tenure in Congress, he championed efforts to expand medical research and was known for his concern of the middle class. (bio by: C.S.)
