Elma E. Munsell, 96, of Parsons died at 7:35 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at Labette Health in Parsons, where she entered Monday.
She was born on Nov. 9, 1915, on a farm near Lebanon to Paul and Eva (Cochran) Butler. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Lebanon High School and earned a teaching certificate. She taught in rural, one-room schools for several years. Her grandfather, David Butler, was the first governor of Nebraska, serving from 1867 to 1871.
On April 23, 1938, she married J. Burl Munsell at Buffalo, Mo. They established their first home in Lebanon. Later they lived in Norfolk, Neb., Abilene, Wayne, Neb., and O'Neill, Neb., while Burl worked as manager of Gambles Stores. They came to Parsons in 1953 to open the Gambles Store here. Later when Burl opened an insurance office, she worked with him as office assistant. Mr. Munsell preceded her in death on March 24, 1981.
Mrs. Munsell was long a devoted member of First Christian Church, where she taught young children in Sunday school and was active in the women's groups. She was a gifted pianist and played often for groups and at nursing homes. She had been active in Church Women United and in earlier years was active in Cub Scout work, the Musical Arts Club and the Parsons Community Concert Association. She loved to communicate with friends through cards and letters.
Survivors include two sons, Jay B. Munsell and his wife, Barbara, of Tulsa and Don Munsell and his wife, Ramona, of Rogers, Ark.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, Jason Munsell and his wife, Mindy, of Columbia, S.C., Amy Munsell and her daughter, Jaden, of Tulsa, Holly Becker, her husband, Russ, and their children, Willow and Canyon, of Tulsa, Mindy Jones, her husband, Berry, and their children, Jonah, Jesse, Mesa and Jericho, of Fort Scott, and Emily Coombs, her husband, Marc, and their children, Skyler and Opal, of Rogers, Ark.; and a brother-in-law, Reed Munsell and his wife, Betty, of Hastings, Neb.
Others preceding her in death include a brother, Ben Butler; and a sister, Pauline Hoefer.
The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church in Parsons. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Parsons. Friends may call at Carson-Wall Funeral Home from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.
