George Washington Hevern was born in Liberty Township, Johnson County, Iowa. On March 10, 1879, he was married to Eva Johnson (1854-1931). The couple first lived on the west side of Iowa City, Iowa, later moving to Williamsburg, Iowa, where George W. Hevern and his brother Harvey worked as liverymen. By 1894, George and his family were living in Chicago, Illinois. On April 5, 1924, while living at 1516 East 69th Place in Harvey, Illinois, and working as a watchman on the Illinois Central railroad there, George W. Hevern died of "shock and injuries due to external violence caused by being struck, knocked down & run over by some unknown train or engine."
