|Death: ||Jan. 10, 1928|
Lover and constant companion of Edward Carpenter for the better part of forty years. He came from a poor working-class family in Sheffield. They were as different in the classes of the time as possible, yet they were living together openly as a couple. It was often assumed that he was "just" the man servant. In fact, he was registered as that at times. He was plain speaking, flirtatious and fond of drink, which led to even more talk. But their devotion grew and they became inseparable. Millthorpe became a retreat and a steady stream of visitors, admirers, cranks and devotees alike created a feeling of pilgrimage at times.
