Emerson Selway, 91, passed away peacefully Nov. 3, 2012, after a short illness.
He was born Aug. 25, 1921, in Dillon, to Roy and Mary (Ries) Selway. He was the youngest of six children and was raised and worked on the family ranch.
In December 1942 he enlisted in the Navy where he was a machinist mate with the Navy Sea Bees. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands and the South Pacific during World War II.
He married Florence Casterline Nov. 28, 1942. They made their home in Dillon where they raised their three children. He worked for Joe White's Garage, College Motors and Minerals Engineering as a mechanic. After Minerals Engineering closed he went to work for Beaverhead County High School where he not only was the only mechanic for many years but also drove a regular school bus route and all of the out-of-town trips. Parents always made the comment that they never had to worry about their children getting home safely, no matter the weather or road conditions, when he was driving. He enjoyed all the teachers, coaches and students he hauled in the 28 years he worked there.
After he retired, he and Florence liked to travel — traveling from coast to coast and Hawaii and taking their life-long dream trip to Australia. They spent a couple of winters in Arizona then started going to their son Steve's home where he enjoyed working with and helping Steve in his race horse surgery practice.
His greatest joy was spending time with his family and doing things with them. One of his favorite things was camping with family and friends. He enjoyed camping, driving his own motor home up camping, till he was 89 years old.
He was the kindest most thoughtful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was always there to help in any way he could. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother; brothers, Harold, Doug, Marvin, Charles; infant sister, Julia; and his wife of 60 years, Florence.
He is survived by sons, Steve (Fran) Selway, and Ron (Juanita) Selway; daughter, Lynnette (Joe) Macioroski; grandchildren, Veronica Selway, Barbie (Ivan) Campos, Trenton (Sheryl) Selway, Justin (Elizabeth) Selway, Charlene (Andy) Walker, and Carrie (Horald) Mitton; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Brundage Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to charity of the donor's choice.
