He entered Norwich University during the summer of 1861 after completing his studies at the schools in Woodstock. He was commissioned second lieutenant in the First U. S. Infantry in February 1862 and was stationed in Leavenworth, Kansas that summer. He was promoted to first Lieutenant on August 1, 1862 and was selected by General James Blunt to transport treasure to Santa Fe in the spring of 1863.
His death notice in The Vermont Journal, October 10, 1863:
"In Windsor, Sept. 29th, of chronic diarrhoea, contracted during the siege of Vicksburg, 1st Lieut. Albert Sabin, 1st U. S. Infantry, aged 20 years and 7 months."
