The son of John & Jane (Goodman) Sellers, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Middle Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. By 1865, he stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg March 13, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 14 as a private with the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. A, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.

He married Rachel M. Grove August 22, 1867, in Harrisburg and fathered Mary Jane (b. 03/01/69 - married John G. Bless), Harry (b. 09/??/71), Carrie Rebecca (b. 02/24/74 - married S. H. May), Rachel May (b. 06/08/77), and Fannie Elizabeth (b. 11/06/79). In 1880, he was living in Harrisburg's 7th Ward where he died from a "cerebral hemorrhage."
