Served in the U.S. Marine Corps - Killed in action during the Battle of Iwo Jima - Awarded the Purple Heart
George was the oldest of ten children born to George and Anna Eckrote Rumpilla. He entered the service from Pennsylvania, and served as a Corporal on the USS Wichita. He was wounded while fighting at Saipan. He was killed in action during the Battle of Iwo Jima and was awarded the Purple Heart for paying the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
George's family placed a cenotaph memorial marker for him in Alberts Cemetery, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
