COLUMBIA Funeral Mass for Mary Buckley Corley, 85, will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Final Commendation and Farewell Prayers will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Corley died October 18, 2006, surrounded by her children. Born in Cambridge MA, she was the daughter of Nora and William Buckley. She graduated from Cambridge Latin High School and distinguished herself as a State Debate Champion and runner-up in a national oratorical contest. She graduated magna cum laude from Radcliffe College at Harvard University, majoring in history and political science. She later received two master's degrees from USC in International Studies and Education. Until the end of World War II, she worked for Army Intelligence in Washington DC. She married General John Thomas Corley, Sr. in 1942 and supported her husband's service to our country throughout their 34-year marriage. Following her husband's retirement as deputy commander at Fort Jackson, she began her teaching career initially at Cardinal Newman and then moved to Spring Valley High School where she became the head of the History Department. She was recognized as the SC Teacher of the Year in 1977 and was instrumental in establishing the Advance Placement Program in Richland District Two. She sponsored more than 100 local students for admission to Ivy League Schools with most attending with full scholarships. She wrote and directed the Spring Valley Bicentennial Celebration at Sesquicentennial State Park. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and a longtime member of St. Joseph O'Brien Guild. After her retirement from teaching, she served as a volunteer Guardian Ad Litem, an advocate for abused children in family court. She touched many lives, but family was always first in her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Brig. Gen. John Thomas Corley and her son, 1st Lt. John Thomas Corley, Jr., who was killed in action in Vietnam. Surviving are her six children: James W. Corley, Robert E. Corley, Mary E. Powers, Col Ellen C. Synovec (Ret.), and Carol A. Windham, all of Columbia; Col. Michael and Solveigh Corley of Fort Monroe VA; her two sisters, Fran O'Donnell of Falmouth MA, and Noreen Lapreye of New Orleans; and 11 grandchildren: Caroline Corley, Laura Powers, Brian Powers, Jonathan Corley, Christine Corley, Michael Corley, Patrick Corley, Thomas Synovec, John Synovec, Sean Windham, Katherine Windham and many dear friends who enriched her life as she did theirs. Dunbar funeral Home. October 20, 2006.
