Age 18. Son of John Parker and Elizabeth Parker.
John enlisted on 22 August 1862 as a Private. He then was enlisted into Co. B, 13th NH Infantry on 18 Sep 1862. He was promoted to Corporal on 01 January 1864 and was killed at Cold Harbor, Virginia on 01 June 1864.
John was the brother of Lucy E. Parker Holt and Lottie Parker Marshall and George A. Parker and Charles F. Parker.
Note: Corp. Parker's father, John, was a recruiting agent for the town of Derry, New Hampshire and was trying to recruit substitutes to serve in the Civil War when he was murdered, on 19 December 1863, for the money he was carrying.
Corp Parker's sister, Lucy, erected a stone for her father which states "Murdered in North Andover, Mass.". If she had not done this, then the tragic story of this family would have been lost forever. Thank you, Lucy, for keeping your family story alive.
In researching the story of this family it has raised more questions in this biographer's mind. Did Corp. Parker know his father had been murdered? What happened to his mother who according to newspaper reports "was insane with grief" when told of the death of her husband. When told of her son's death six months later did that send her into a deeper depression? She cannot be found in the 1870 census yet did not die until 1872... so what happened to her and where was she in the years before she died?
On 24 May 2008, the Gilman E Sleeper, Camp #60 SUVCW and AUX held a memorial service and placed a wreath, G.A.R. marker and a flag next to his stone. Attending the ceremony was Amy, the Grand Niece of Cpl. Parker.
